Nearsightedness Is Rising in Kids. Here's How to Slow It Down.
Childhood myopia is climbing fast, and higher prescriptions carry real long-term risk. Myopia management can slow the progression while your child grows.
If your child’s prescription seems to get stronger every year, you’re not imagining it, and you’re not alone. Myopia, or nearsightedness, is rising rapidly in children worldwide. More screen time, more near work, and less time outdoors have all played a part.
The good news: we can now do more than simply hand out a stronger pair of glasses each year.
Why a rising prescription is worth taking seriously
Myopia isn’t just an inconvenience. The higher a person’s prescription climbs, the greater their lifetime risk of serious eye conditions later in life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic maculopathy.
That’s the real goal of myopia management: not just to help your child see clearly today, but to keep their prescription as low as possible into adulthood, lowering that long-term risk.
How myopia management works
There’s no single right answer for every child. After a full evaluation, we recommend the approach that best fits your child’s eyes, age, and lifestyle. Options include:
- Low-dose atropine eye drops — a nightly drop shown to slow progression
- Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) — special lenses worn overnight that gently reshape the eye, so kids see clearly during the day without glasses
- MiSight 1 Day soft contact lenses — daily disposables designed specifically for myopia control
- Myopia-control spectacle lenses — glasses built to slow progression
We track your child’s prescription, and often the physical growth of the eye, over time. That lets us measure how well the plan is working and adjust as they grow.
What parents can do at home
Alongside treatment, a few habits genuinely help:
- Encourage time outdoors — even a couple of hours a day is protective
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes of near work, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
- Keep screens and books at a comfortable arm’s length
When to start
Myopia management works best when it begins early, before the prescription has climbed too far. If your child is becoming nearsighted, it’s worth a conversation. Book a myopia consultation and we’ll walk you through the options.
