OptiLight IPL: A New Standard for Lasting Dry Eye Relief

If drops aren't cutting it, OptiLight IPL treats the inflammation at the root of evaporative dry eye. Here's how the treatment works and what to expect.

OptiLight IPL: A New Standard for Lasting Dry Eye Relief

For years, dry eye treatment mostly meant one thing: more drops. Drops help, but for many people they only manage symptoms without ever addressing the cause. OptiLight IPL is different, and it’s changing how we treat one of the most common forms of dry eye.

What is OptiLight?

OptiLight, made by Lumenis, is the first intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy FDA-approved for dry eye management. It uses precise, gentle pulses of light applied to the skin around the eyes to treat the root causes of evaporative dry eye.

If you’ve heard of IPL, it may have been in the context of skin treatments. The technology here is applied specifically to the eye area, and it does something remarkable for dry eye.

How it actually helps

Most dry eye is evaporative, meaning the oil (meibomian) glands in your eyelids are blocked or inflamed, so your tears evaporate too quickly. OptiLight works on several fronts:

  • Reduces inflammation around the eyes that keeps the glands from working
  • Restores meibomian gland function, so your tears have a healthy oil layer again
  • Clears blocked glands and reduces the bacteria and mites that contribute to irritation

The result is a healthier, more stable tear film, and lasting comfort, not just a temporary fix.

What to expect

OptiLight is non-invasive and done right in our office. A typical course is a series of four sessions, spaced a few weeks apart. Each session takes only about 10 to 15 minutes.

Most patients describe the sensation as a warm, light snapping feeling. There’s no numbing required and no downtime, so you can go straight back to your day. Many people begin noticing improvement partway through their series, with results continuing to build afterward. A simple maintenance session now and then helps keep the relief going.

Is it right for you?

OptiLight is a great option for people with evaporative dry eye who haven’t found lasting relief from drops alone. The first step is always a proper dry eye work-up, so we can confirm the cause and make sure IPL is the right fit for your eyes.
